Fulton County District Attorney Office Project Legal Lives

Project Legal Lives is a law-related education program that brings the criminal justice system into elementary school classrooms. It is designed to teach children about the law, the legal process, the criminal justice system, and the values on which these institutions are based. Legal Lives seeks to prevent juvenile delinquency through the development of critical and analytical thinking skills at this crucial developmental stage when
children are beginning to make decisions that will impact the rest of their lives.

Through the Legal Lives program, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office works within the school system to teach students about the law and how it applies to real-world situations in their own lives. By visiting the classrooms, the assistant district attorneys who teach the course provide role models for the children as well. This relationship between the students and the staff of the District Attorney's Office is what makes the program work. Students may begin the program with a negative image of law enforcement and the criminal justice system based on negative personal experiences. The goal of Legal Lives is to impress upon them the importance of maintaining respect for the law and the civil society it protects by providing the children with a positive image of the justice system.

In recent years, the program has included Dean Rusk, Peyton Forest, Oglethorpe, Arkwright, Venetian Hills, and Bethune Elementary Schools. The program culminates with a field trip of some kind to destinations as far away as Washington, D.C. where the students were able to meet with their state senators and representatives, tour the capitol, attend legislative sessions as well as visit numerous museums, galleries, and memorials.
