GRAND JURY INDICTS SUSPECTED MARTA KILLER

State vs. Broderick Smith

Atlanta- Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. announces the Grand Jury indictment this morning of Broderick Angelo Smith, 20. Smith is charged with six felony counts including Murder, Felony Murder (two counts) Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for the Marta Station killing of 19-year old Anthony Beavers last week.

Beavers was shot and killed on the night of March 17, 2010 on a platform at the East Point Marta Station. According to the preliminary investigation, witnesses saw a man arguing with the victim and then draw a gun. Six shots were fired, striking the victim twice. Beavers died on the scene from his injuries. Defendant Smith was arrested a few hours later in the vicinity of the shooting.

The victim, Anthony Beavers, was a standout graduate from Jonesboro High School and former chess champion. He was pursuing a career in law enforcement at the time of his death.

Following the indictment today, the case will be assigned to a Fulton County Superior Court Judge and scheduled for trial. The case is being prosecuted by the Major Case Unit.
