Mario Brannon Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison for Attack on Atlanta Teen

Defendant, Identified by DNA Match, Pleads Guilty
to Rape, More in Attacks on Two Women

Atlanta—Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. (Atlanta Judicial Circuit) announces that, following his guilty plea, Mario Brannon (37) has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for attacks on two women, one aged 17 at the time and the other 25. Brannon pleaded guilty to rape, aggravated assault (two counts), kidnapping (two counts), robbery by force, and robbery by intimidation. Brannon abducted the first victim from the street on her way to work on 15 November 1999. He dragged her into a deserted area near 900 Grant Street in the Grant Park neighborhood where he assaulted her. The second victim was similarly abducted on her way to school on 11 January 2002 and assaulted in the vicinity of 102 Ollie Street in southwest Atlanta.

A DNA match on the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) identified Brannon as the women’s attacker in September of last year. A third CODIS match last year links the defendant to yet another attack in April of 2002.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Gayle Abramson prosecuted the case, Atlanta Police Detectives G. Nichols and R. Bailey investigated, and Judge Fred Eady presided.
