Stabbing Victim’s Killer Found Guilty

Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. announces the conviction last night of Herman Ingram in the brutal stabbing of Gloria Cochran. Ingram was found guilty of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Knife During a Crime. The Fulton County Superior Court jury began its deliberations last night and returned guilty verdicts in less than three hours. Judge Newkirk sentenced Ingram to life in prison plus five years.

On Sunday July 2, 2006 Ms. Cochran (50) was attending a party on Chappell Road in Atlanta with others from her community when she was physically accosted by the defendant. Witnesses say that Cochran asked Ingram to stop several times before finally slapping him. The Defendant pulled a lock blade pocket knife from his right pocket and stabbed Cochran in the chest. Ms. Cochran collapsed on the scene. Medical Examiner Geoffrey Smith testified that the injuries that Ms. Cochran sustained severed her pulmonary vein which resulted in death within minutes of being stabbed.

The case was prosecuted by Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney Fani Willis. Lead Detective on the case was APD Detective Wilson. It was investigated by Beth Suber of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Investigations Unit. Services to the witnesses and family members of the victim were provided by Felicia Deas of the DA’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program.
