DEFENDANT CONVICTED OF KILLING MAN WITH FATAL GUNSHOT WOUND TO LEG

Killer on Probation for Shooting Three Other Victims In Legs

Atlanta- A Fulton County Jury has convicted 37-year old Antwain Miller of Atlanta of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon for the 2008 shooting death of his acquaintance, Rick Coverson, age 50.

Coverson was killed on July 26, 2008 while hanging out with friends at a Plaza Lane home in Atlanta. The victim and defendant were smoking crack cocaine together when Defendant Miller began to argue with the victim about money he owed him for drugs. Miller, twice the size of the victim, then placed Coverson in a headlock and put a nine millimeter gun to his head. Witnesses fled the house and called 911. The defendant meantime shot the victim in the arm and also the upper leg- severing the victim’s femoral artery causing him to bleed to death on the scene. The defendant fled immediately but was arrested by fugitive detectives later in Dekalb County. At the time of the murder, Miller was on probation for a 1997 aggravated assault case in which he was convicted of shooting three other victims in their legs.

Following his conviction for Rick Coverson’s murder, Miller was sentenced to life in prison.

Senior Judge Fred Bishop (a visiting judge from Gwinnett County) presided over the case. It was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Dalia Racine with assistance from ADA George Jenkins and DA Investigator Bernadette Hernandez. Detective J. Thorpe of the Atlanta Police Department led the initial investigation.
