GUILTY! SERIAL RAPIST CONVICTED

Originally charged with one rape, DNA hit links defendant to others

Atlanta- Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. announces the conviction by jury trial of 47-year old Jonathan Robinson for the rape of two women dating as far back as 1999. After six hours of deliberations, jurors this afternoon found Robinson guilty of two counts of Rape, two counts of Kidnapping and Armed Robbery. Following his conviction, Robinson proceeded to launch a verbal attack on the Court and the District Attorney’s Office but was quickly interrupted by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams who immediately sentenced Robinson to two consecutive life sentences plus sixty years.

On March 13, 2000, a female victim was using a gas station telephone on Hill Street when the defendant pulled up in a black car and claimed to know the woman. When she ignored him, the defendant told the victim she was under arrest, forced her into the car and handcuffed her. He drove to a secluded area off Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, forcibly raped her and pulled out a chunk of her hair. The victim later told police Robinson wore a bullet-proof vest, had a silver badge around his neck and a pad with the words “police” imprinted on it.

In May 1999, Robinson offered to give another female victim a ride to Bankhead Highway but began driving in a different direction. The victim asked him to turn around and when he refused, she tried to escape the vehicle. Robinson grabbed the woman, took her purse, money and cell phone and drove to a secluded area off Chester Avenue where he raped her. The defendant then put the woman out of the car and drove off. She was discovered clinging to a tree, crying and screaming “he raped me.”

Both rape cases went unsolved until 2001 when Robinson was arrested for a Dekalb County rape. The defendant’s DNA was subsequently entered into a computer database and was a positive match for the outstanding Fulton County cases for which he was convicted this afternoon.

Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams presided over the case. It was prosecuted by Senior District Attorneys Lee Williams and Chuck Boring of the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit with assistance from DA Investigator Greg Patterson. Detective J.J. O’Brien of the Atlanta Police Department led the initial investigation.
