GRAND JURY INDICTS ATLANTA POLICE OFFICER FOR AGGRAVATED ASSAULT
Dispute over Friends Cell Phone Led to Charges
Atlanta- A Fulton County Grand Jury has indicted Atlanta Police Offcer Killroy F. Jackson, 35, in connection with a January 2010 assault on a civilian. Jackson, a Zone 4 officer, is charged with one count of Aggravated Assault, one count of Terroristic Threats and two counts of Violation of Oath by a Public Officer. TMiya Hayward, 18, has been named as a co-defendant and is charged with one count of making False Statements for lying to investigators during the course of the investigation.
The charges stem from an alleged dispute between the victim, Deandre Stafford, and his girlfriend, Ms. Hayward, outside a Jonesboro Road home on January 22, 2010. According to the investigation, Hayward claimed her boyfriend took her cell phone and refused to return it. She then left the location and called her friend Officer Jackson to pick her up. The two then returned to the scene of the argument where Officer Jackson, off-duty at the time, confronted the victim. Jackson allegedly slammed the man against a wall, put a gun to his head and according to witnesses, threatened to kill him if he did not return the cell phone. The victim complied and Officer Jackson and Ms. Hayward left the scene. Jackson was implicated in the crime following 911 calls from the victim and several witnesses.
Officer Jackson turned himself in to authorities following his indictment Tuesday afternoon. The case will now be assigned to a Superior Court Judge and scheduled for trial. The case is being prosecuted by the Public Integrity Unit.
