BODY IN TRUCK NETS DEFENDANT 25 YEARS

Mario Konecny Sentenced for Conviction on Arson, Concealing a Death

Mario Konecny—arrested on Delk Road in Marietta with a dead man in the back of his truck—has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Earlier this month, a Fulton County Superior Court jury found Konecny guilty of arson, concealing the death of another, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and tampering with evidence. Late yesterday, Superior Court Judge Bensonetta T. Lane sentenced the 32-year-old defendant as follows:

-20 years on the arson conviction

-10 years on the concealing the death conviction (to run concurrent with arson)

-5 years for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; and

-12 months for tampering with evidence—commuted to time served.

The jury found Konecny not guilty of murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping charges.

On Monday, November 28, 2005, police were called to the Racetrac service station on Delk road off I-75 north by a store clerk after a woman told him she had been kidnapped. At the gas pump, in the back of Konecny’s truck they found the body of Charles Quigg. The Sandy Springs mortgage broker had been shot to death. Police later learned his home on Brandon Mills Road had been set on fire. The police investigation also showed Konecny and Leslie Slater, the woman who claimed she had been kidnapped, had been doing drugs with the victim when Konecny stole drugs and cash, set the house on fire and shot Quigg.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Fani Willis and Senior ADA Eric Dunaway. It was investigated by Officer D. Romero of the Fulton County Police Department and Steve Barresi of the DA’s Investigative Unit. Monique Massey was the DA’s Victim-Witness advocate.
