Nakia Burgess Case Update Atlanta-The 29-year-old mother who left her three-year-old developmentally challenged daughter in her car while she went to work has been sentenced to five-years probation. Nakia Burgess pleaded guilty earlier this year to involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in the October 2002 death of Asante. Asante died of hyperthermia after being left strapped in her car seat in a closed, locked car for several hours. The state recommended a sentence of 15 years in prison, with six to be served. Superior Court Judge Constance Russell imposed a sentence of five years probation, with no time to serve. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said "when it comes to cases involving children, Judge Russell hands out sentences as tough as anywhere in the country. Therefore, while I might not agree with the outcome in this case, I respect the decision Judge Russell has made."
