GUILTY! JURORS CONVICT ANTOINE WIMES FOR MURDER OF CONVENIENCE STORE CLERK

Defendant Gained Notoriety for Cutting Ankle Monitor and Allegedly Attacking More Victims While on Bond

Atlanta- A Fulton County Jury has returned a guilty verdict in the murder case against Antoine Wimes, 18. The defendant was charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony for the death of Obiakor “Obi” Onyemaechi, 48. Wimes was immediately sentenced to Life plus five years in prison by Fulton County Superior Court Judge John Goger.

Mr. Onyemaechi was shot and killed July 13, 2008 while working as a clerk at the Quick Stop II convenience store on Cascade Road. According to witnesses, Wimes entered the store and lured the clerk from behind a protective glass barrier by feigning interest in a T-shirt. Once in full view of Wimes, the defendant shot the victim three times- twice in the chest and once in the back- and fled the scene. Onyemaechi died in route to Grady Memorial Hospital. Wimes was arrested in February 2009 following an extensive investigation in which the defendant was positively identified from several photo line-ups. In May of 2009, Wimes was granted bond and placed on house arrest with an ankle monitor. Wimes is accused of removing his ankle monitor in August of 2009 and subsequently assaulting a Chattahoochee Hills woman and her baby in an armed robbery attempt. Trial is scheduled for September 20, 2010 in that case.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Clint Rucker prosecuted the current case against Antoine Wimes with assistance from ADA Charissa Henrich and Senior DA Investigator G.G. Carawan. Detective D. Quinn with the Atlanta Police Department led the initial investigation.
