District Attorney Clarifies State's Position on Charges

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announces today that contrary to news reports, the District Attorney's Office is NOT seeking to consolidate charges in the case against Tacuma Jawara. The D-A's Office is however, seeking to consolidate cases under one indictment.

Jawara, 54 has been indicted on three counts of theft by taking for stealing jewelry and cash from patients at Grady Hospital. Jawara appeared before Judge Richard Hicks on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 for a preliminary hearing in which bond was denied.
Jawara was arrested on September 2, 2008 for stealing $900 dollars in money orders from a patient last November who later died. Jawara had previously been released on bond for two earlier cases in which he was accused of stealing a wedding ring from one victim, and a gold chain and wedding ring from a second victim.

The District Attorney's office has filed a motion to consolidate all three cases under one indictment and place it on a Superior Court calendar. Jawara could face up to 10 years on each of the three counts. The defendant is scheduled to be arraigned On October 2, 2008.
