FORMER ATLANTA POLICE OFFICER CONVICTED OF MOLESTING 12-YEAR OLD GIRL

Defendant Worked as a Resource Officer at Victim’s School

Atlanta- Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. announces the conviction by jury trial of Wilson Carstaffin, 46. Carstaffin, a 17-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department at the time of the incident, was convicted Friday afternoon of two counts of Child Molestation, two counts of Sexual Battery and a single count of Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes. Carstaffin was sentenced to 20-years in prison and 20-years probation.

The charges against Carstaffin stem from an incident on November 30, 2007. Carstaffin, who worked part-time as a School Resource Officer at Crawford Long Middle School in Atlanta, called the victim out of class and asked her to meet him after school at a nearby church. The victim, who is slightly developmentally delayed, complied. The defendant drove the child around for several hours, fondled her and asked if he could be her boyfriend. At one point, Carstaffin dropped the victim off temporarily at a gas station while he went to take his wife a pair of shoes she had left in the car. The defendant returned to pick the victim up about fifteen minutes later and drove her around for several more hours.

Carstaffin eventually dropped the girl off outside of her apartment complex that night. The victim explained to her parents that she had been with the officer since school dismissed, but Carstaffin refused to communicate with the girl’s father when he attempted to contact him. The victim later disclosed to a teacher details of what the officer did to her during their encounter. Carstaffin was later arrested, indicted and eventually dismissed from his employment with the Atlanta Police Department.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kelly Amanda Lee presided over the case.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Melissa Redmon of the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit with assistance from Senior ADA Adrian Love and DA Investigator Cindy Williamson. Sgt. Charles Hampton of the Atlanta Police Department led the initial investigation.
