DISTRICT ATTORNEY PAUL HOWARD ANNOUNCES CONVICTION
IN HIT-AND-RUN DEATH OF MARTA OFFICER MICAH BROWN

RICKY POTTS GUILTY IN 2003 HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE

Atlanta-Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. (Atlanta Judicial Circuit) announces that Ricky Potts (35) has been found guilty of the 8 October 2003 vehicular homicide that took the life of MARTA Police Officer Micah Brown (29). Potts was convicted of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, serious injury by vehicle, misdemeanor hit-and-run, and misdemeanor reckless driving and faces up to 15 years when he is sentenced on 10 December.

Responding to an early morning call in southwest Atlanta, Officer Brown was traveling south on Lee Street when the defendant made a right turn off of Donnelly Avenue and into the officer's path. (Officer Brown had the right of way at the traffic signal.) The victim swerved to avoid a collision and struck a concrete pillar-suffering serious brain trauma and other injuries-and the defendant fled the scene. Potts was arrested a few hours after the incident, and Officer Brown died several days later.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Shondeana Crews prosecuted the case, and Judge Isaac Jenrette presided.
